By: Gere Iverson (MSTv) One would call John Bukaty, a visitor to New Orleans on a mission. But, his mission -the bring a sense of beauty to one of the scourges of the Crescent City - is something usually handled by the N.O. Public Works department. But, Bukaty didn't feel like waiting for those guys.. “When I first moved down here, I was like, ‘Are you freaking kidding me? Do you know how bad the streets are?’” he stated. However, the response he usually got from locals, wouldn't surprise anyone. Everybody was like, ‘Yeah, we know. We’re just used to it.’ When Bukaty, (41) an artist and native of Kansas City, moved to New Orleans, he was completely unprepared for the terrible street acne NOLA is known for. “For the first month, I’d hit (a pothole) and my nerves would hit my neck, and I was pissed,” he said. Yet he didn't leave town or complain - he got creative and developed an exhibit out of his anger. “NOLA Pot Holes: Impressions of Street Art,” is now open at Bukaty's gallery@ 841 Carondelet St. And profiled among his exhibits are plaster casts of some of the most sinister and hidden pothole terrors New Orleans has to offer. To initiate his creative process, Bukaty and his team line their chosen pothole subjects with plastic sheeting, then in goes the plaster. But, public safety is always a concern for them - they always put cones around their work areas first. “What’s funny is that while we were doing the potholes, putting cones up, we were actually making the streets safe,” he claimed. Then-- “Maybe not safer for us," he added. Pieces in his exhibit range in size, from small to gigantic, based on their source subjects. Plus, Bukaty has added casts of additional street scenes like streetcar tracks, to further enforce the reality of his art. And art it may be, but Bukaty hardly thinks potholes are beautiful. “Life is about trying to find beauty in the ugliness of everyday life,” he said. “I’ve found that as a common theme. And there ain’t nothing pretty about potholes.” NOLA Pot Holes: Impressions of Street Art John Bukaty Studio & Gallery, 841 Carondelet St. (The former site of Jonathan Ferrara Gallery) More information and times: Visit the gallery website By: Connor James - MSTv Arsenio Hall could be called the bastard son of late-night television royalty. Exploding completely unexpectedly onto the scene with the syndicated, "Arsenio Hall Show" in 1989, Hall quickly dominated the arena that was once ruled only by the Tonight Show and Letterman. And from 1989 to 1994, the ruling houses of Carson, Leno and Letterman couldn't put up much of a fight against Hall's massive appeal. However in 1994, Hall decided to just walk away from his wildly popular show. But now, on Monday 9/ 9, "The Arsenio Hall Show" returns to late-night TV - with a similar feel, but a new millennial attitude. "There’s a lot of competition now,” says Hall. “Back in the day I was trying to take anything that was left over on Carson’s plate. Now, It’s a huge challenge this time to bring people to the television." "Because you have that ability to Google anything and find anything that’s been on. It’s hard to get people to even watch you and make appointments for television, so the challenges are gigantic now," he added. But, Hall intends to win over new fans using the formula that worked prior. "The approach will be familiar to fans of the old show. It’s kind of the same Arsenio you know. Less hair, less shoulder pads, but inserting myself into this culture of music, comedy, pop, and hip-hop," he said. Despite leaving his original show almost two decades ago, Hall didn’t just fade into obscurity. The veteran comic has guest hosted a variety of shows, hosted a “Star Search” revival and eyed his late-night return when “The Celebrity Apprentice” re-introduced Hall to a broad audience in 2012. With a growing anticipation of fun times ahead, it seems the public might be more than ready for Hall's return. Hall says, “People hope you do a good, funny show and you assert a unique personality that’s not (already) there, so that you can just be in the game. I’m trying to be in the game.” Yet now, much like 25 years prior, Hall has stiff competition to vanquish towards his regaining the late night crown. “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” has promoted harder by ABC. Jay Leno will turn over “The Tonight Show” to Jimmy Fallon next year. Letterman just keeps chugging along and several other names stand by to raise their game to the top spot as well. However, Hall intends to play to win as his premiere week guest list shows: Chris Tucker (Monday), Ice Cube, Lisa Kudrow, Mac Miller (Tuesday), Magic Johnson, George Lopez, Nas (Wednesday), Mark Harmon, Penn & Teller, Earth, Wind & Fire (Thursday) and Angela Bassett and Emblem3 (Friday) With a lineup like this, it looks like Hall is off to a good start for new dominance. We'll be watching. Will you?
Finally "outed" after 44 years??
By: Conner James - MSTv Its been a question asked for decades: are Sesame Street characters, Burt and Ernie gay? Well, in the midst of the new Gay marriage ruling laid down by the Supreme court and according to next month's New Yorker magazine (left), they just might be. Or maybe not.. The two, who have been eternal roommates since the show's PBS debut in 1969, were crafted by Muppets creator, Jim Henson. The relationship of the characters was based on the real-life friendship of voice actors, Jim Henson and Frank Oz. The puppet duo were virtually the only Muppets to appear in the pilot episode. And since they tested well, they've been a mainstay ever since. However, allegations of the pair being "more than friends" has been circulating since the 1980's. Being roommates in a Sesame Street apartment, the duo share a single bedroom. However, they do sleep in separate beds. This, in addition to their not having much interaction with other characters on the show, (most of their segments are self-encapsulated) especially females, has led some to suggest that they might be a gay couple. These rumors, vehemently denied by the Sesame Street Workshop, have been spun and placed in damage control to squash the growing beliefs. Some examples to show otherwise have been segments of Bert's interactions with female characters and showing his attractions to women. But the idea of Bert and Ernie as a couple is so sufficiently widespread that it has been used as the basis for jokes on several television shows and remains strong within the general public conscious. Recently, The New Yorker magazine chose an image of Bert and Ernie by artist Jack Hunter, titled 'Moment of Joy', as the cover of their July 8, 2013 publication which covers the Supreme Court decisions on the Defense of Marriage Act and California's California Proposition 8. As trademarked images, usage of the characters in such a fashion had to be approved, despite adding fuel to the fire. But are the allegations true? As before, executives at Sesame Street remain staunch that the characters are "sexless" and celebrate friendship, despite their "differences." Differences? Hmm, can this be yet another question, or another can of worms opened? Dylan O'Brien speaks on "Teen Wolf S3," "The Internship," has fun and reveals secrets. Kinda..6/5/2013 By: Kent B - MSTv I've often heard the world revolves around timing - that everything hinges on timing. Now, I've never been one to believe in that phrase, but it seemed my specific timing was right on point this Monday past. I've worked in broadcasting and on our MSTv show for a minute. And, I've had the great fortune to meet several celebrities working in the SE Louisiana area over the years. But, how much were the stars in alignment when I just happened to be at my regular job when MTV Teen Wolf star, Dylan O'Brien was in our studio, doing satellite up-links for his new movie, "The Internship?" Even more coincidental, it just happened to be the day season three of Teen Wolf was premiering. From these simple incidents you gotta realize that, yes, now I completely believe in timing... Meeting, speaking and arranging the interview with Dylan, (after the usual talks with his "people") wasn't hard. After all, he was in my "backyard," so to speak. And since the average age of the people working at my station is 50+, most of them had no idea who he was anyway. So, I figured he'd be happy to escape from people his parents age and talk about topics near and dear. We caught up with him in the station green room, and since we had no prior knowledge of his coming, we made it a casual and quick shoot with my camera phone. Before the actual interview, we got to know him a bit and I can say that Dylan is a really cool, funny and laid back guy. And with my being more familiar with his character of, "Stiles" on Teen Wolf, I can attest he's just as funny in real life as the slapstick best-friend character he plays on the show. So, after lots of jokes and laughter, we tucked into the season 3 secrets behind Teen Wolf! Dylan throwing out general quotes like, "origins and history," "a war" and "Stiles finally gets to bust some heads" gave us an idea what to expect on this season's show. It was a just teaser, but when I saw Monday's premiere, I understood it a little better. BTW, how confusing was that episode, right? Alpha wolf packs, ninja girls, weird references to Alfred Hitchcock's, "the Birds," tattoos, Lydia banging it up rebound style and Scott and Allison not speaking? WTF??? Anyway, Dylan couldn't give too much away, of course. Dude needs to keep his job, we like him on the show and he was at our station pitching his current and upcoming films, "The Internship" and "The Maze Runner," after all. With "The internship," which premieres June 7th, Dylan plays a Google intern who befriends a couple of 40-something-old guys ( Vince Vaughn & Owen Wilson) who become clueless interns at Google after losing their jobs selling wristwatches. Wristwatches? Wow, the 20th century is making a comeback, I guess. I know, it sounds like this movie might be some kinda "Revenge of the Nerds meet Wedding Crashers" feel good flick. But, Dylan made it sound cool, so guess I'll be checking it out and maybe reporting on it this Friday. With that, "The Maze Runner" flick he mentioned sounded somewhat like another, "Hunger Games/Battle Royale" type-ish movie that he's currently filming in Baton Rouge. Since it hits theaters Valentine's day 2014, I guess he'll be in town for a few months. Here's hoping we can wrangle another interview in the future and gain more ideas on what we can expect in the film.
Who will be my successor?
Reproduced from: BBC News Doctor Who star Matt Smith is to leave his role as the Doctor at the end of this year, the BBC has announced. After four years as the Time Lord on the BBC One show, viewers will see Smith's Doctor regenerate in the 2013 Christmas special. The 30-year-old actor said working on the show had been "the most brilliant experience". Doctor Who marks its 50th anniversary in November with a special episode, which Smith has already filmed. The BBC said Smith's "spectacular exit" was yet to be revealed and would be "kept tightly under wraps". Smith first stepped into the Tardis as the 11th Doctor in 2010. Taking over from David Tennant, he was the youngest actor to play the role. Speaking after the announcement, he said he was "incredibly proud" of what the show had achieved over the last four years under Steven Moffat, the show's lead writer and executive producer. Smith also thanked fans around the world for their "truly remarkable" dedication to the show. 11 Doctors' down. Only two remain. During his tenure, Smith's floppy-haired, bow tie-wearing Time Lord has fought enemies such as Daleks, Cybermen, Weeping Angels and the Silence. His Doctor has shared his adventures with Amy Pond (Karen Gillan), Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) and most recently, Clara Oswald (Jenna-Louise Coleman). Referring to his time-travelling companions, Smith said: "It's been an honour to play this part, to follow the legacy of brilliant actors, and helm the Tardis for a spell with 'the ginger, the nose and the impossible one'. But when ya gotta go, ya gotta go..." Show runner Steven Moffat said: "Every day, on every episode, in every set of rushes, Matt Smith surprised me. The way he'd turn a line, or spin on his heels, or make something funny, or out of nowhere make me cry - I just never knew what was coming next. "The Doctor can be clown and hero - often at the same time - and Matt rose to both challenges magnificently. And even better than that, given the pressures of this extraordinary show, he is one of the nicest and hardest-working people I have ever had the privilege of knowing. Whatever we threw at him - sometimes literally - his behaviour was always worthy of the Doctor." Matt's exit statement is below Moffat added: "Great actors always know when it's time for the curtain call, so this Christmas prepare for your hearts to break as we say goodbye to number 11. Thank you Matt - bow ties were never cooler." The announcement of Smith's exit is likely to spark months of fevered speculation about his replacement. 'Still so exciting' "Somewhere out there right now - all unknowing, just going about their business - is someone who's about to become the Doctor," Moffat hinted. "A life is going to change, and Doctor Who will be born all over again. After 50 years, that's still so exciting." "Doctor Who has been the most brilliant experience for me as an actor and a bloke, and that largely is down to the cast, crew and fans of the show. "Arrested Development:" still brilliantly funny, free & rehabilitated with a new life -- online5/24/2013
The Bluth family is released to the custody of Netflix
By: Gere Iverson - MSTv Additional content from Associated Press "Now the story of a wealthy family - who lost everything - and the one son who had no choice but to keep them together." A simple, but truthful quote that began every episode of one of the most brilliant and unappreciated comedies of the new millennium, "Arrested Development." The gist of Arrested Development centers on the wealthy, but highly dysfunctional, Bluth family. The focus and center of the show is middle-son, Michael Bluth (Jason Bateman), who works to keep his family together, despite their materialism, selfishness, obvious insanities and manipulative natures. Though the series has received widespread critical acclaim, since its debut in 2003, the six time emmy winner failed to draw a niche audience during its troubled three year run. The show suffered from low ratings and viewership on the Fox network and it was canceled in 2006. However, television "death" isn't so final in this information age. In response to numerous pleas by fans, talks of a possible movie and even actions from the cast and creators themselves, the online streaming service, Netflix agreed to license new episodes and distribute them exclusively via their site. A Normal family?? Are you kidding?! The award-winning show about the dysfunctional Bluth family returns Sunday May 26th - seven years after Fox cancelled the series. The show is the third exclusive series from Netflix Inc. this year. It's part of the company's effort to add more original programming to a selection that consists primarily of old TV series and movies. In a recent analysis posted on BTIG's Research analyst Rich Greenfield blog, Greenfield predicted that the total number of hours watched on Netflix in June might even surpass the Fox broadcast network for the first time. If that were to happen, it would be an ironic twist, given that Fox canceled "Arrested Development" in 2006 over the protest of the series' fervent fans. "Arrested Development" had low ratings during its run, but the viewers who did watch loved it. Others discovered the show later on DVD or Internet streaming — both of which have been available through Netflix. Smile everyone! Don't frighten them off, now! The first three seasons of "Arrested Development" were being watched by so many subscribers that Netflix knew another season would be well-received by its existing audience and would likely lure new subscribers, too. Like Netflix's previous series, all 15 new episodes of "Arrested Development" will be released simultaneously to allow viewers to watch the show as if they were perusing a book and deciding how many chapters to pore through in a single sitting. "Arrested Development" is scheduled to be available at 12:01 a.m. PDT Sunday (3:01 a.m. EDT), meaning Netflix subscribers could conceivably devour the entire season before grilling on Memorial Day afternoon.

Reproduced from NOLA.com NOLA Veggie Fest comes to the New Orleans Healing Center, 2372 St. Claude Ave., this weekend (May 11-12). The timing couldn’t be better, at least if you’re one of the many New Orleanians still trying to digest the meat pies and cochon de lait po-boys consumed during the vast community pig-out that just took place at the Fair Grounds. Nola Veggie Fest features food vendors, restaurants, cooking demos, speakers, films, product samples and a children’s area. It’s designed for anyone with an interest in healthy eating and new cuisines. But the festival also is a place to see how individual food choices can have an impact on the environment by promoting sustainable lifestyles and animal protection. Much of the focus will be on vegan cuisine. The festival, which launched in 2009, is a project of the Humane Society of Louisiana. A lead sponsor of the fest is the New Orleans Food Co-op, which operates a community-owned grocery store at the New Orleans Healing Center. A festival day pass is $15 at the door and includes a T-shirt, tote bag and product samples. The outdoor food vendor area is free and open to the public. (Other ticket options and festival details can be found at nolaveggiefest.com). The festival runs Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. The NOLA Veggie Fest Afterparty, a fundraiser for the Humane Society, takes place at Café Istanbul in the Healing Center on Saturday from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. The entertainment includes burlesque and belly dancers and a number of musical groups. Admission is $10. Tickets are available through the festival website. For another dose of vegetarian food, check out India Fest at the New Orleans Museum of Art on Saturday. If you have an interest in the sustainable lifestyle issues raised at NOLA Veggie Fest, you might want to look into the Eat Local Challenge 2013. The NOLA Locavores group is encouraging New Orleanians to go 30 days in June eating only foods grown, caught or raised within a 200-mile radius of the city. They hope to “raise awareness of the nutritional, economic, environmental and cultural benefits of eating locally sourced foods.” Concentrating only on this? Think again!
